A look into Belgium's youth culture scene.
Yan Yango (@dontframekevin) is a 25 year old photographer based in Antwerp, Belgium, who shared their interpretation of dance and youth culture in his environment. Below is their thoughts on the scene as a whole.
“Compared to other cultural hubs like Amsterdam, London, and Berlin, some would perceive the music culture in Antwerp as a few steps behind the rest. However, the music scene in Antwerp has been omnipresent for years and has been making big strides in the fields of performance, design, and art with festivals like Horst leading the charge. Due to my upbringing and personal interests I’ve always been more attracted to disco, house, and techno music due to the more positive nature of these genres.”
Especially in Antwerp, the underground music scene offers a more accepting and inclusive atmosphere which is a crucial factor for me. Therefore, this particular scene in Antwerp attracted and built a community of young energetic creatives with a similar love for sounds and art despite coming from different backgrounds.
As this community is growing, I’m developing my skills as a photographer to capture the environment where I feel at home.”
