Feature photographer, Milton Vestbrant

What’s your background?

My name is Milton Vestbrant, I am 24 years old. Born and raised in Sweden. I spent my first years in low class neighborhoods, I remember eating spaghetti at my friends place when his dad all of a sudden pulled out a gun. Weird things like that happened a lot and I think that sort of uncanny weirdness really stuck with me and has shaped/influenced me in many ways. My parents have a house now and its really incredible what a journey they have made! We moved out to the country side when I was 10, I think that was a good thing.

What inspires you to create?

Lots of things. People, music, day to day suffering, nature etc.. Lately I have been watching Werner Herzog films and YouTube clips. He’s such a hero of mine. Thanks to him I understand the idea of traveling better and I want more of that in my work. I have many obsessions, I have always been fascinated by so many different things. My greatest obsession at the moment is the early black metal scene.

What do you love about photography?

I love how a frozen moment can evoke so many questions. In best of cases really fundamental questions about being alive and what it means to be human. A good photograph evokes something in me that often confuses me, but it makes sense at the same time. Its weird and really great.

Talk about anything you love around dance, street, youth cultures and subcultures.

Well I love skateboarding if that qualifies. A skaters mind is different. Skateboarding has a really interesting way of making you look at things in a different way. And the skateboarding culture is very rich in many ways. A lot of the things I love now really comes from skateboarding. I have so much to thank skateboarding for. I remember watching my first skate film (flip sorry) and instantly a whole new world opened up for me. It’s actually insane when I think about it. The impact it had on my life.

Otherwise I can’t really say if there are any specific sort of cultures/subcultures that I am really into. I’m kind of into a lot of things. If it’s raw and gnarly, I’m probably into it.

What sets you apart from others?

That’s a tough one. I guess I am interested in working in different mediums. I am afraid of becoming the type who only do the same thing over and over. I’m really interested in filmmaking. I dream up film scenes in my head at work. Im also interested in painting and writing. There are so many things I want to do, but there’s too little money.
