The psychedelic, weird, and wonderful album artwork by Storm Thorgerson. From Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Muse, to Phish… Thorgerson has been behind some of the most prolific album artworks since the 1970s.

Interestingly, Thorgerson studied English and Philosophy at university and then studying a masters in film. Afterwards, he established graphic design groups such as Hipgnosis, which he formed with Aubrey Powell. He described himself as always wanting to place objects outside their usual contexts, to give them an almost awkward positioning in a wider space. You can see this view is reflected perfectly in the work you see above.

In his own words, “I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality ... to bend reality. Some of my works beg the question of is it real or not?"

Storm Thorgerson passed away in 2013, but his impact lives vicariously through his album cover artwork.
